IBM Report Reveals Significant Rise in Global Data Breach Costs in 2024 https://www.theconsultingreport.com/ibm-report-reveals-significant-rise-in-global-data-breach-costs-in-2024/ Fri, 30 Aug 2024 12:00:58 +0000 https://www.theconsultingreport.com/?p=14402 IBM’s latest “Cost of a Data Breach Report” for 2024 reveals that the global average cost of a data breach has surged to $4.88 million, marking a 10% increase from 2023. This rise, the largest since the pandemic, is attributed to escalating lost business and increased post-breach response costs. The study, conducted by the Ponemon Institute and sponsored by IBM, analyzed data from 604 organizations worldwide between March 2023 and February 2024. It highlights that 70% of breached organizations experienced significant disruptions, with recovery taking over 100 days for many.

The report underscores critical issues such as the impact of understaffed security teams, which faced 26% higher breach costs, and the effectiveness of AI-powered security measures. Organizations extensively using AI in security operations saw an average cost reduction of $2.2 million per breach. Data visibility gaps remain a major concern, with breaches involving data across multiple environments averaging over $5 million in costs. The report also notes a notable increase in intellectual property theft and the role of law enforcement in reducing breach costs. IBM's findings emphasize the need for enhanced security measures and investment in advanced technologies to mitigate future breaches.

Deloitte Study Reveals Strategic Focus on Ethical AI Governance Among C-Level Executives https://www.theconsultingreport.com/deloitte-study-reveals-strategic-focus-on-ethical-ai-governance-among-c-level-executives/ Thu, 29 Aug 2024 12:00:57 +0000 https://www.theconsultingreport.com/?p=14399 Deloitte’s recent study, "Leadership, Governance and Workforce Decision-Making About Ethical AI," highlights the growing emphasis on ethical AI governance among C-level executives. The survey, conducted in June 2024, found that 89% of executives believe that robust ethical governance structures are crucial for fostering technology innovation. The study, which surveyed 100 corporate leaders, underscores a human-first approach to AI regulation, with a strong focus on equipping the workforce with the necessary skills to ensure responsible AI use. Despite this, fewer than one-quarter of executives allow independent decision-making on ethical AI, with larger companies demonstrating a higher tendency towards delegating such decisions.

Key findings of the study include a predominant reliance on training and ethical review committees to enforce AI governance, with 76% of organizations conducting AI ethics training for employees and 63% for board members. Balancing innovation with regulation and ensuring transparency in data use are top priorities for respondents. Additionally, the study reveals that AI is expected to significantly benefit operational areas such as supply chain management and employee retention. Kwasi Mitchell, Deloitte's Chief Purpose and DEI Officer, emphasized that effective governance frameworks are essential for driving positive impacts and maintaining trust in AI technologies.

Rising Tide of Zombie Companies: Kearney Reports Significant Growth Amid Economic Strain https://www.theconsultingreport.com/rising-tide-of-zombie-companies-kearney-reports-significant-growth-amid-economic-strain/ Thu, 22 Aug 2024 12:00:15 +0000 https://www.theconsultingreport.com/?p=14329 Zombie companies—businesses that survive on external funding but can't cover their debt payments from current profits—have surged nearly 9 percent annually since 2010, now totaling 2,370 worldwide, according to a recent report by Kearney. This growth is attributed to high inflation and elevated borrowing costs, with Kearney identifying 827 new zombie companies in 2023. These businesses represent 5.8 percent of publicly traded firms globally. The report analyzed 75,000 companies across 154 industries and 152 countries, utilizing over 5.5 million data points to assess financial viability from 2000 to the present.

The research indicates that smaller firms, particularly those with annual revenues of $500 million or less, are disproportionately affected, with their zombie share increasing from 6.2 percent in 2022 to 6.7 percent in 2023. As companies grapple with rising interest rates, Kearney conducted stress tests predicting a potential rise in zombie companies, where increased debt servicing could affect 6.6 percent to 7.7 percent of firms. Experts from Kearney emphasize the urgency for businesses to adopt proactive strategies, such as restructuring or debt conversion, to enhance resilience and avoid insolvency.
