Over the previous three years, an overwhelming 94% of respondents reported having higher expectations, and 80% believed these demands would only increase. The study, which polled 250 H&S function leaders from a range of industries, focuses on how leadership involvement affects H&S's success. Significantly, leadership participation was cited by 95% of respondents as the best way to promote H&S development, and 34% of respondents said it was essential for improved performance. Nevertheless, only 2% of H&S experts believe they are completely prepared to handle these changing requirements.

The report also underscores the importance of addressing psychosocial risks, with 87% of participants marking it as a growing concern. Despite this, organizations are struggling to keep pace, with many only now beginning to develop strategies and policies to tackle these issues. The lingering effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, coupled with the shift towards remote work, have further complicated the H&S landscape. Increased senior leadership engagement and a better understanding of the business benefits associated with robust H&S strategies are seen as crucial to navigating these challenges and ensuring the psychological well-being of employees.

M&A Strategy Drives PwC Spinout Guidehouse’s Expansion https://www.theconsultingreport.com/ma-strategy-drives-pwc-spinout-guidehouses-expansion/ Tue, 21 Feb 2023 13:00:11 +0000 https://www.theconsultingreport.com/?p=9678 In 2018, Big Four firm PwC spun off its public sector management and consultancy group, launching Guidehouse, a specialized business focused on government consulting. In the five years since then, the company has built deep public sector experience and is expanding into commercial, adding depth to core and complementary capabilities through a strategy driven by mergers and acquisitions.

In 2023, the company’s services span five industries: energy, sustainability, and infrastructure; health; state and local government; financial services; and defense and national security, with business roughly split 60% public sector and 40% commercial. In that time period, the business has reached revenue of $3 billion, largely driven by its M&A activity.

“Each of the acquisitions brought new capabilities as part of our investment thesis but also somewhat changed the scale between commercial and public sector depending on their backlog in their business,” said John Saad, Partner and Segment Leader for defense and national security at Guidehouse, on the American Society of Military Comptrollers’ The Business of Defense podcast. “But it’s all part of our plan to be relatively equally weighted in commercial and public sector.”

Guidehouse’s strategy has prioritized sharing knowledge across its public sector and commercial clients as a key differentiator, taking advantage of its scale and experience to bring more deeply-informed advisory to its clients. The strategy has been effective due to the company’s experience in highly complex and sensitive federal work, especially in cybersecurity, operational management, and financial management, lending significant credibility to its interactions with commercial clients.

Its public sector clients benefit too, with the firm able to more easily apply commercial practices in government by bringing in stakeholders from commercial clients to share new perspectives with public sector clients. The firm’s emphasis on diversity in hiring is helping it drive innovation, attracting talent from different places with their own unique perspectives and mission focus.

Saad said that Guidehouse is seeking to deepen its skillsets across national security and defense, with additional M&A activity planned to reinforce the firm’s digital offerings in the sectors, supplementing its existing advisory capabilities. Its 2022 acquisition of Grant Thornton’s public sector practice serves as an example of its commitment to its federal and local government clients, with more to come as it fills in where it has needs.

Want Happier and More Productive Employees? Use AI to Make Their Jobs Easier https://www.theconsultingreport.com/want-happier-and-more-productive-employees-use-ai-to-make-their-jobs-easier/ Fri, 03 Feb 2023 13:00:32 +0000 https://www.theconsultingreport.com/?p=9525 Once the subject of science fiction and futurist speculation, artificial intelligence (AI) is here, and it’s already changing the world. Despite the steady stream of conjecture that AI will upend work as we know it and throw millions of people into unemployment, the technology thus far has served as a compliment to human workers, freeing them from repetitive, non-value-added work to focus on more complex problems with a greater impact on business success.

According to research by McKinsey & Company, at least 30% of tasks in 60% of jobs could currently be automated, thus increasing efficiency. For example, cognitive data capture tools can extract data from unstructured documents faster and more accurately than humans can, reducing the need for manual data entry. Filling forms, expense management, and scheduling are all fairly tedious tasks that AI can save humans from having to endure. Communication and productivity tools that leverage AI, such as generative AI software ChatGPT, can streamline frequently repeated communications and optimize email marketing, improving ROI and leaving humans to focus on more creative efforts.

People perform better at their jobs when they’re set up for success, and freeing them from boring, repetitive tasks that don’t deliver a genuine sense of accomplishment seems like a no-brainer. More than three quarters of respondents to an Oracle survey said that AI-assisted work helped their mental health, with nearly a third reporting reduced stress. Businesses can reap these benefits by adding AI-capable tools to their tech stack, empowering their people to work on more important and complex endeavors.

Beyond day-to-day work, AI can also help with the bigger picture. Companies such as Johnson & Johnson are already using AI to assess employee skills and needs, helping identify and reduce skills gaps. Starbucks is using AI to help manage employee schedules, predict staffing needs, and assist with inventory and ordering as well as equipment maintenance.

While work will still be, well, work, it doesn’t have to be boring, unengaging, and unrewarding. Using AI to offload repetitive non-value-added tasks can help teams focus on what matters most to them and boost on-the-job engagement and performance. Far from a tool that will destroy jobs, AI will help enhance them, enriching the lives of workers everywhere.

Booz Allen Announces Investment In Reveal Technology https://www.theconsultingreport.com/booz-allen-announces-investment-in-reveal-technology/ Tue, 03 May 2022 16:00:20 +0000 https://www.theconsultingreport.com/?p=7928 Booz Allen Hamilton recently made a strategic investment in visual analytics and edge artificial intelligence (AI) company Reveal Technology, Inc.

The Silicon Valley-based Reveal blends AI and edge computing technologies to deliver intuitive, rapid intelligence via its Farsight software platform. Farsight provides actionable battlefield intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance capabilities to high-risk environments without the need for network connectivity and on timelines where seconds count. Its AI-powered insights and decision aids include real-time 2D mapping, near real-time 3D mapping, route planning, and line of sight analysis, enabling better, faster, and safer decisions and responses.

“Reveal has developed solutions that increase situational awareness and accelerate the decision cycle for dismounted warfighters. Their technology provides rapid, actionable intelligence at the squad and soldier levels while answering the government’s call for speeding the delivery of applied and tactical AI to the battlefield, said Joel Dillon, Booz Allen Senior Vice President of Digital Battlespace Special Missions. “It’s a gamechanger—and something I wish I had when I was in combat.”

Farsight’s intelligence-gathering capabilities leverage a small drone to perform reconnaissance and integrate with preloaded data on the locations of adversaries and friendlies, as well as other critical information that can be used to plan troop movements and calculate line of sight of threats. The technology works on a wide variety of devices, including smartphones and tablets.

The latest partnership with Reveal comes as the firm works to add additional capabilities to its Digital Battlespace platform, which supports the firm’s global defense clients by providing digital warfighting tools and networks. Booz Allen joins other investors in Reveal Technology such as 8VC and Defy Partners, The Defense Innovation Unit, Air Force Research Laboratory/AFWERX, and the Marine Corps Warfighting Laboratory.

The investment is part of Booz Allen’s tech scouting program, which seeks to grow promising companies in the digital battlespace, cybersecurity, AI, and machine learning sectors. To date, Booz Allen has made four investments and has spun out two businesses from its own organization in which it holds a minority equity partnership. Other large systems integrators such as Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, and Northrop Grumman also employ tech scouting and investment programs, bringing niche technologies into major defense programs.
